Common Bra-Fitting Mistakes Women Make and How to Avoid Them

Many of us learned bra sizing once and never questioned it again. A few common mistakes can leave you in a size that “almost” works — until midday discomfort shows up. Here is how to spot them and fix them.
- Choosing a looser band for comfort — A band that feels “easy” in the fitting room often rides up later. Support comes mainly from the band. It should feel firm on the loosest hook when new.
- Ignoring sister sizes — If a 34C cup fits but the band is loose, try 32D. Sister sizing keeps cup volume similar while changing band tightness. Always reassess cup fit after you change the band.
- Letting straps do all the work — Over-tight straps dig in and cannot replace a supportive band. Adjust so they stay in place with only light tension.
- Sticking to one size forever — Weight changes, hormones, age, and workouts all affect fit. Remeasure periodically instead of rebuying the same label size on autopilot.
- Judging fit only from the front — Check the back view too. A riding band, gaping cups, or a floating centre gore are clearer from the side and back.
- Buying only by looks — Lace and colour matter — after fit. A beautiful bra in the wrong size will not stay beautiful to wear.
